To the literary, literal, and scientific mind purposeless fiction is abhorrent. Fortunately we all are literally and scientifically inclined; the doom of purposeless fiction is sounded; and it is a great comfort to believe that, in the near future, only literary and scientific works suitable for man, woman, child, and suffragette, are to adorn the lingerie-laden counters in our great department shops. It is, then, with animation and confidence that the author politely offers to a regenerated nation this modern, moral, literary, and highly scientific work, thinly but ineffectually disguised as fiction, in deference to the prejudices of a few old-fashioned story-readers who still survive among us. -- R.W.C.

I always read the 1-star reviews to see what people didn't like so if you're like me and check them out you'll find two of them pretty much tell you nothing and the third one is so long it might as well be published in Readers Digest. It seems the main reason for the long negative review is that the characters are rich lay-abouts and don't have jobs. True enough, but that doesn't keep them from being interesting and likeable.

I am not giving this book 5 stars because it is certainly predictable and, as noted above, the characters and their social condition don't inspire a great deal of empathy. But those are the only negatives I can come up with. The writing is excellent and the situations are interesting and somewhat unusual in the way that many comedic stories are. But they are believable, as is the behavior of the characters and they are all tied together nicely with considerable humor and charm. It is quite simply a very pleasant read. Not life-changing, but entirely enjoyable.

The author puts titles on each chapter, and there is one named for one of the female characters, Flavilla. But the chapter subtitle made me literally laugh out loud: "FLAVILLA - Containing a Parable Told with Such Metaphorical Skill that the Author is Totally Unable to Understand It." How can you not like a book where the author makes fun of himself?

I downloaded this book because it was free and have now downloaded all the other free books by this author because I enjoyed "The Green Mouse" so much. If only a machine COULD truly be made to ensure your one perfect match could be made for life. The book was entertaining. The language very quaint and old fashioned but easy enough to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose themselves for a few hours.
Great Transaction - would do business with again
I thought the plot of this book was very creative and entertaining. I admit, I bought it because it was free, yes - but I enjoyed it greatly. Granted, I do have a soft spot for that victorian-esque fiction....
I had never heard of this author before, but got the book because it was free. Now I want to read more of his writings! This book was so funny that I actually laughed aloud several times. Really an outstanding book, especially for one that is quite old.
I just finished The green mouse and I thought it was a cute and funny read. Great escape from your problems for a few hours. And it was free!
Amusing concept, just didn't get past my "suspension of disbelief" threshold. Amusing, wonderful reminder of past mores, but just as satisfying as just one s'more. I'm glad I didn't pay any money for it, but it was worth the time spent to read it.
This is an enjoyable and interesting book. It is about an invention that brings men and women together no matter where they are on earth. The two are destined to fall in love with each other and live happily together. The book contains the stories of several couples who meet in unusual circumstances where love always prevails. The book is very imaginative with a hint of Twilight Zone.
